Cornmark

This project explores aspects of global design within a multi-geographic context, focusing on products manufactured in two geographically distant locations. Guided by shared functional and cultural principles, the design draws on high- and low-tech methodologies, regional fabrication techniques, and local raw materials to create adaptable, sustainable, and meaningful products for diverse environments.

Corn is the third-largest food crop in the world,

but we typically consume the kernels only. The other parts of the corn plant are often regarded as waste, which amounts to 1.2 to 1.8 billion tons annually.

“How can we design with the corn wastes?”

US and Denmark

Why these two countries?

US is the world’s largest producer of corn, and this crop holds profound cultural and agricultural significance.

Denmark is renowned for its minimalist design, which emphasizes simplicity, functionality and sustainability.

Cornmark Lamps

Corn generates a significant amount of agricultural waste—corn husks and cobs that are often discarded or underutilized. This project addresses the challenge by transforming these byproducts into a series of eco-friendly lamps. Cornmark lamps showcase the natural beauty of corn fibers and grains while promoting sustainability. Inspired by the textures, patterns and warm hues of corn, each lamp harmonizes nature and design, bringing a soft, organic glow to the space.
